What We Know

Thousands of educational apps are available to schools and families. Most lack formal regulation. The Learning Standard has catalogued 177 apps in the Direct Instruction category. We are currently rolling out our complete evaluation process and have not yet formally reviewed these products.

We track external credentials to help parents and educators understand the market before our independent reviews publish. Thirty-one apps in this category hold the Common Sense Privacy certification. Twenty-seven have the ISTE Seal. Another 27 hold the ICEIE certification for Effectiveness and Efficacy. Twenty-six apps carry Project Unicorn Interoperability credentials, and 15 have Digital Promise Research and Evidence certifications.

Some applications have earned multiple credentials. EasyTech has 9 recognized certifications. Lexia® Core5® Reading and Pear Deck both carry 7. Levered Learning Math holds 6, and Actively Learn has 5.

These industry credentials show that a publisher submitted a product for outside review. Academic outcomes improve with more exposure to well-designed systematic programs. Our upcoming evaluations will test if these 177 apps actually deliver the teaching and guided practice necessary for Direct Instruction.
