K-12 classroom technology is growing fast globally, but school districts and families face a disconnect between ballooning digital tools and actual educational value. As spending climbs, parents and educators struggle with screen-time fatigue and student data privacy. Clear academic results remain scarce. Families and schools must look beyond marketing promises to focus on what works.
What Happened
A new market research report from Valuates Reports projects that the global K-12 education technology market will grow from $28.25 billion in 2025 to over $132 billion by 2032. This is an annual growth rate of 25%. Online software drives this trend, making up over 85% of the market. Companies like PowerSchool and Pearson dominate the market, alongside emerging tools in virtual reality (VR) and STEM learning.
This spending is colliding with tightening public school budgets. Federal relief funding from the pandemic has expired, forcing districts nationwide to audit their digital purchases, as noted in a recent GovTech report on district budgeting. Schools must now justify every dollar spent on software. This has started debates about which tools actually support learning.
The Bigger Picture
Despite buying many classroom apps, school districts see little return on investment. Research by Digital Promise shows that the average school district uses nearly 3,000 different edtech tools in a school year. Yet 65% of those student licenses go completely unused.
This software accumulation has caused a public backlash. Parents are tired of constant screen time, and some are suing. Parents in California filed a lawsuit over the math and reading program i-Ready, arguing that excessive classroom screen use is a public health crisis. In response, large school systems like Los Angeles Unified are scaling back software use.
But public outrage does not always influence district decisions. An Education Week survey of school leaders found that concerns about screen time rarely drive decisions to keep or cut a digital tool. Administrators look at software cost and ease of use. They also prioritize whether teachers actually use the product.
Academic results are also mixed. A broad meta-analysis of K-12 VR programs suggests that interactive virtual reality can boost performance, but classroom experiments show different outcomes. A study in the Journal of Educational Technology and Learning Creativity found that sixth and seventh-grade students learning Mandarin vocabulary performed better, and retained the information longer, under traditional teacher-led instruction than when using immersive VR headsets. Students in the VR group also reported physical and emotional discomfort from the hardware.
Data privacy is another issue. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), schools can share student records with software vendors without parental consent using the "school official exception". This is allowed as long as the school maintains direct control over the data. Meanwhile, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires companies to provide explicit direct notices to parents before collecting data from children under 13. Compliance, however, remains inconsistent.
What This Means for Families
For parents, the rapid growth of edtech means children are exposed to a fragmented digital environment. While some tools offer personalized learning, others are just expensive digital babysitters that collect student data without parental oversight.
