A new wave of education technology startups in Kenya is shifting focus toward children who are often left behind by digital learning tools. Supported by a major global fellowship, these early-stage ventures aim to solve basic access and inclusion challenges rather than chasing rapid growth.
What Happened
On July 23, 2026, the technology hub iHub and the Mastercard Foundation unveiled 12 startups selected for the fourth cohort of their EdTech Fellowship in Nairobi. This cohort changes the program's strategy. While earlier rounds supported established, growth-stage companies, this 18-month program provides early-stage founders with up to $100,000 in equity-free funding to validate their ideas.
The selected startups target specific underserved areas in Kenya. To help learners with disabilities, startups like DEAFHEALTH, AssistiveMath, Signvrse, Deaf Outreach Program, SmartSteamMinds Edtech, and Chipurobo are building assistive tools and specialized software. Other startups, including Neurollect Audread, JUZA AI LTD, Ubuntu Universe Limited, and RYEH CBO, are designing offline-first, multilingual apps for rural classrooms and refugee communities. Finally, Gwiji for Women and Tausi App are providing vocational and digital skills training specifically for young women.
As we previously reported, popularity does not always equal educational value. This fellowship attempts to address that disconnect by helping founders test their tools with real students before attempting to scale up.
The Bigger Picture
The focus on assistive and inclusive technology aligns with academic research. For example, a ScienceDirect meta-analysis of 30 randomized controlled trials involving over 4,800 students found that technology-based reading interventions yielded a reliable, positive effect on elementary reading outcomes. Similarly, a Springer Nature meta-analysis on adaptive technologies for autistic students found a moderate positive impact on emotional engagement, particularly when using immersive tools like Virtual Reality. However, that same study warned that early-stage product evaluations are often prone to high risk of bias, meaning parents and educators must look closely at how educational outcomes are measured.
Deploying technology in rural areas presents physical challenges. According to an iDream Education regional assessment, more than half of all schools in rural Sub-Saharan Africa lack reliable internet access. When schools transition to offline-first platforms, teachers can shift from lecturing to visual, concept-driven lessons, as documented in rural school trials in Sitamarhi. Yet, installing software is not a quick fix. Ground-level reports from remote smart classrooms show that technology only works when basic needs are met first, such as safe buildings, classroom furniture, and student well-being.
To address this, global initiatives are changing how they evaluate success. The Mastercard Foundation has noted that edtech programs frequently prioritize technology over actual learning outcomes. In response, partner organizations are embedding learning science and rigorous impact measurements directly into fellowship designs. They are also shifting away from basic download counts toward comprehensive Program Outcome Assessments that measure the actual quality of life and opportunities created for young learners.

For parents and educators, this regional shift shows that the best learning technology is designed for a child's specific environment rather than sold with flashy marketing. Students in rural areas or those with learning disabilities do not need complex, cloud-based applications that require constant bandwidth. They need accessible, offline-first tools that work in their daily routines.

Teachers should look for tools that allow students to learn at their own pace and in their own language, rather than one-size-fits-all programs.
