High school students in rural West Virginia are building functional artificial intelligence applications without computer science degrees. An educational pilot enabled these teenagers to design and launch dozens of mobile apps, offering a potential path to close the digital divide. By using "no-code" technology, the initiative shows how schools can prepare students for a labor market where basic AI literacy is quickly becoming a requirement.
What Happened
The pilot program, developed by app-creation platform Thunkable and supported by The Rockefeller Foundation, brought hands-on AI and entrepreneurship training to 120 students in Monongalia, Kanawha, and Berkeley counties. During the program, students with no prior programming experience built about 80 mobile applications designed to address local community needs. These projects included local business tools and The School App, which was built by participating students.
Before the program, about half of the participating students reported having little familiarity with core tech concepts like machine learning and algorithms. According to program organizers, the weekly curriculum combined technical tutorials with business planning to help students become active creators rather than passive technology consumers.
The Bigger Picture
This experiment comes as high school graduates enter a changing workforce. Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests that AI is already capable of replacing nearly 12 percent of tasks in the U.S. workforce. Findings from the Boston Consulting Group indicate that over half of all workers will see their day-to-day jobs reshaped by AI in the near future. Entry-level and task-dense positions are most exposed to these disruptions, which makes early exposure to these tools important.
The transition also changes workplace expectations. The global PwC AI Jobs Barometer reveals that entry-level job roles are shifting rapidly. Junior employees in AI-exposed fields are now seven times more likely to be asked for skills like leadership. Employers are actively looking for generative AI proficiency in standard non-technical roles like marketing and human resources. In rural states like West Virginia, this training is complicated by infrastructure gaps. The state historically ranks among the worst in the nation for broadband connectivity, with about one-third of residents lacking reliable high-speed internet. Some local districts are fighting back. For example, Doddridge County Schools partnered with local providers to supply free home Wi-Fi and laptops to all enrolled students, which triggered a significant rise in state assessment scores. Yet, federal support remains uncertain, as the FCC debates whether to reduce the crucial E-rate program that subsidizes school internet connections.
