OpenAI has launched a $250 million program giving up to 100,000 academic researchers free access to its advanced GPT-5.6 and Codex models. While this initiative aims to accelerate scientific discovery, its restrictive eligibility rules and high-tech features raise questions for parents and educators preparing students for college-level research. What Happened
According to an official announcement on the OpenAI Developer Community, the "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers" program will start by giving 10,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers access this summer, before scaling up through 2027. Selected researchers will get free access to the GPT-5.6 model family, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro. This model features expanded deep research capabilities and larger context windows to process massive documents.
