As technology changes rapidly, schools face pressure to abandon rigid, traditional classrooms. Educators and researchers are questioning traditional methods, arguing instead for personalized learning that builds curiosity over conformity. The challenge is to adopt tools like artificial intelligence while keeping empathy and high-quality teaching at the center of education.
What Happened
In an interview with ETEducation, Prabhat Jain, co-founder of Pathways World School in Gurugram, argued that modern education must shift its focus. Instead of pushing students to meet standard benchmarks, Jain believes schools must develop adaptable, lifelong learners. He argues schools should treat artificial intelligence as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for teachers. Jain emphasized that human judgment and empathy must remain at the core of the classroom, allowing schools to evolve alongside changing technology.
The Bigger Picture
Global research supports the shift away from standardized education, though the practical execution varies. Some studies show that AI boosts student performance when customizing lessons. For instance, a study in the Journal of Science and Mathematics Education tracked high school chemistry students using an AI-powered adaptive learning platform. Students using the AI platform averaged 83.7 on posttests, compared to an average of 72.4 for those taught with conventional methods.
But technology is not a universal fix. A study of over 86,000 students in the East China Normal University Journal of Educational Sciences compared AI-driven personalized instruction to 'universal high-quality instruction.' The researchers found that personalized AI pathways did not outperform strong traditional teaching, yielding a statistically insignificant difference of 0.01 standard deviations. While AI tools like the tutoring assistant Khanmigo support learning, they do not replace skilled teachers.
To balance technology and human teaching, initiatives like the STIAEM project (Slow Tech in Education and Artificial Intelligence) advocate for digital wellbeing, framing AI as a co-creator rather than an automated replacement. Higher education is adopting similar models. At UNC Charlotte, a new concentration in human-centered AI requires students to study ethics and philosophy alongside technical skills.
Schools are also rethinking grading. A systematic review in Research and Education notes that traditional tests measure memorization well but fail to evaluate critical thinking or creativity. In response, some public school districts, such as those in Kentucky, now track skills like collaboration and problem-solving instead of relying solely on test scores.
Traditional letter grades are also losing ground. A network of 400 schools in the Mastery Transcript Consortium uses alternative report cards to track soft skills. Some of these schools use AI platforms to help teachers evaluate verbal presentations by analyzing student posture and tone. For parents, these changes mean classrooms are becoming more interactive. You can expect fewer standardized drills and more projects centered on problem-solving and collaboration.
