Security experts warn that campus facilities and digital databases are connected, meaning administrators must change how they approach school safety.
What Happened
School building systems are vulnerabilities because districts connect facilities directly to central networks. Keith Krueger, CEO of the Consortium for School Networking, warned that school cybersecurity plans must include facilities management to prevent remote breaches. The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also urges superintendents and school boards to make cybersecurity risk management a priority. When heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems or IP cameras link to the same networks that hold student data, a flaw in a physical controller can compromise the entire school system.
The Bigger Picture
These vulnerabilities have real consequences. Cybersecurity researchers at Team82 recently found severe flaws in Trane Tracer SC+ HVAC controllers, which are used in facilities worldwide. These flaws included hardcoded global credentials and authentication bypasses that let unauthorized remote users control physical climate systems.
Attackers who exploit these physical entry points can then access high-value data. According to data from the Center for Internet Security MS-ISAC, 82% of reporting K-12 schools experienced cyber incidents between July 2023 and December 2024. In 2024, ransomware attacks hit 116 U.S. school districts, shutting down classrooms across 2,275 campuses. A single December 2024 breach of the PowerSchool platform exposed 62 million student records, the largest educational data breach in history. Districts are increasingly refusing to pay extortion fees. This has driven the median ransom payments in lower education to fall to $800,000, but the recovery process still drains public school funds.
