LiFT®

LiFT is a partially effective tool that provides a framework for project-based learning, but its success depends entirely on how your child's school implements it. Because LiFT operates as a platform for teachers to build and assess projects rather than a standalone instructional app, it does not directly teach your child new concepts. Instead, it organizes their learning process. The platform relies on mastery-based assessment, meaning your child must demonstrate understanding through portfolios and projects rather than simple multiple-choice tests. Learning science supports this approach, as creating authentic projects requires deep cognitive processing and the synthesis of multiple skills. However, parents should know that LiFT lacks automated instruction or real-time corrective feedback. If your child struggles with a concept, the platform itself will not provide a hint or a tutorial video. The teacher must step in. Furthermore, since the app focuses on middle and high school grades, it requires a high degree of executive functioning and self-regulation from your child to manage long-term projects. We have not yet formally evaluated LiFT, but its structure aligns with sound pedagogical theory provided the school provides robust support.

LiFT uses a competency-based and project-based learning approach to help students demonstrate mastery through portfolio building. Teachers use the platform to design interdisciplinary projects, set grading rubrics, and track student progress against specific learning standards. When your child logs in, they do not see endless drill-and-practice questions. Instead, they access project dashboards where they upload evidence of their learning, such as essays, videos, or presentations. The platform acts as a collaborative workspace where students can submit drafts and receive qualitative feedback from their instructors. This cycle of submission, feedback, and revision mimics the learning science principle of spaced retrieval and elaboration, provided the teacher implements the feedback loops effectively. Students progress by proving they have met specific competencies rather than just earning a passing letter grade. The software aggregates this evidence into a digital portfolio that follows your child from sixth grade through graduation, offering a holistic view of their educational journey.

LiFT's biggest strength is its alignment with authentic, competency-based assessment, while its biggest weakness is the complete lack of built-in instructional content. Project-based application is a highly effective way to solidify learning because it forces students to use elaboration and synthesis to solve complex problems. By requiring your child to build a portfolio of evidence, LiFT moves away from shallow recognition tasks, like multiple-choice quizzes, toward deeper cognitive engagement. Peer and teacher feedback loops are explicitly supported within the platform workspace, allowing for formative assessment before a final grade is assigned. Conversely, the absence of direct instruction and automated feedback is a significant vulnerability. Learning science dictates that immediate, specific feedback is crucial when a student makes an error during initial skill acquisition. LiFT cannot provide this. It relies entirely on the classroom teacher to notice misunderstandings and intervene. Executive functioning demands are also high. Managing multi-step, interdisciplinary projects requires significant self-regulation, which can overwhelm students who struggle with planning. Ultimately, the platform provides an excellent architectural framework for learning, but it leaves the heavy lifting of actual instruction entirely to the school.

LiFT is best for middle and high school students enrolled in progressive, project-based schools that prioritize competency over traditional grading. Because the platform targets grades six through twelve, it is ideal for older children who have the executive functioning skills required to manage long-term, multi-step assignments and curate comprehensive digital portfolios. It is strictly an institutional tool and is not suitable for independent home use, homeschooling parents seeking a pre-packaged curriculum, or students who need highly structured, step-by-step direct instruction to grasp foundational academic concepts.
