Khan Academy recently updated its AI tutor, Khanmigo, to provide faster responses and track whether students correctly answer subsequent questions. While the nonprofit claims these updates keep students engaged, researchers warn that high-speed assistance can hinder long-term learning.
What Happened
Between October 2025 and April 2026, Khan Academy tested ways to improve Khanmigo. The organization worked to reduce response latency, the time a student waits for the AI to reply. By using a faster AI model and programming the system to write shorter messages, developers cut response times by up to three seconds.
The company also evaluated success using "next-item correctness," a metric that tracks whether a student gets the next problem right without AI help. Khan Academy uses this to measure independent learning. As we previously reported, the organization began redesigning the tutor after finding that only 15% of students were using the tool.
The Bigger Picture
Speed is a priority in software design. Research on interface latency shows that immediate AI responses keep users focused, and studies on voice tutors confirm that delays disrupt the rhythm of learning.
However, a fast tutor carries risks. A study from the Wharton School found that students with on-demand access to AI tips performed less than half as well as peers who received controlled assistance. The researchers identified a "self-regulation paradox": students often cannot resist instant help, which leads them to outsource their thinking instead of working through problems.
Metrics used to define educational success may also be flawed. While tools like Khanmigo measure correctness against a predetermined benchmark, experts from Microsoft Research warn that simple success rates suffer from "systemic validity failures." They argue that getting one question right does not prove a student has achieved transferable knowledge.
Rolling out AI tracking tools also introduces privacy concerns. Using AI to monitor student performance can trigger new FERPA compliance risks by creating new categories of educational records. Because generative AI models may use input data for training, university compliance offices advise against entering sensitive information into AI systems. Government guidelines recommend that schools sign strict Data Processing Agreements that legally restrict how third-party vendors use classroom data.
What This Means for Families
The push for faster educational technology puts parents and teachers in a difficult position. A fast AI tutor might feel natural, but speed can discourage the productive struggle necessary for learning. If an AI gives away hints too quickly, it becomes a crutch. Privacy also remains a moving target, so parents cannot rely on general compliance claims to protect data from AI model training.
